Slice of Life #22: Day 25: Spine Poetry

For the month of March, each day I am writing and posting a slice of my life, hosted by Two Writing Teachers.

Slice of Life #22:
Day 25/31: Spine Poetry

I love libraries. I love bookstores. I love being in a room with bookcases filled with books. I love how books are arranged. I love how the spines of books feel on my fingertips.

I can easily get lost in books in the best way.

In our school library on Thursday, I spotted a random pile of books that made the perfect spine poem. It was like book fate! Check it out:

Slice of Life #20 Challenge Day 5/31: Spine Poem Play

Slice of Life #20 Challenge Day 5/31:
Spine Poem Play

In the past I have written about my love of collecting words and phrases, arranging them, and simply dabbling with words. For me, creating Spine Poetry is pure play. My nerdy girl soul comes alive.

Fellow Slicers, Parent Teacher Conferences is tonight. No matter how great/meaningful the conversations I will engage in, it will be a long, exhausting day. So, I intentionally began today with writing play.

Below are two Spine Poems I created this morning. The first poem is based on a collection of books I am currently reading. The second originates from a group of professional books, who all happen to be written by educational professionals I especially admire.

The Beautiful Lost/
Broken Open/
Speaking Truth

Being the Change/

The Journey Is Everything

I have created Spine Poetry before; it's always a bit addicting, yet rewarding. Below are links of past posts I have written that also include my Spine Poetry:

How will you show up to play today?

March Slice of Life Challenge Day 8: Spine Poetry

For the month of March, each day I am writing and posting a slice of my life, hosted by Two Writing Teachers

March Slice of Life Challenge Day 8: Spine Poetry
Have you ever tried Book Spine Poetry? For me, writing a Spine Poem is simple and fun, yet so visually appealing. As I was straightening up my bookshelves at school on Thursday afternoon I wrote two new Spine Poems.

My first Spine Poem is based on professional education resources (and some of my favorite books). The second Spine Poem uses mostly Young Adult titles.

For the Good of the Earth and Sun
Poetry Matters.
Minds Made for Stories.
The Journey is Everything.
Write Beside Them.
Read Write Teach.
Imagine It Better.
If you're reading this
hold still
for one more day.
Just listen

Tuesday Slice of Life: Snow Day Spine Poetry

Tuesday Slice of Life: Snow Day Spine Poetry

As I compose this post, we are home again from school today, due to Winter Storm Destiny. This is the fifth unexpected day off of school in three weeks. I continue to love extra time at home with my favorite humans and pets, yet I am tired of significantly altering my lesson plans and rescheduling meetings and after school events. And the snow. Did I mention the forecast reports that we are to receive a total 8-12 inches of snow by the conclusion of this storm?

Sigh.

Don't worry. I have enough books and school work and tasks around the house to keep me busy for days. As I was trying to organize some books last night I got distracted and created a few spine poems:

Onward
Fiercehearted.
Thrive
Figuring
How the Light Gets In.

Reader, Come Home.
Spark
Joyful
 Almost Everything: Notes on Hope.

Stay safe and warm, friends.

(*I updated this post because I forgot to add Almost Everything to last line in my second Spine Poem!)

Slice of Life 2018 Day 3: Spine Poetry Reminder

I’ve had a lot on my mind this week. It’s been a bursting week, both at home and school, leaving me feeling a bit overwhelmed and messy in every way possible. Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually.

I need today to relax and regenerate, but there is an unending to-do list and too many activities to transport our kids to and from. And our house is currently a disaster, with piles of laundry waiting, dishes piled in the sink from last night’s dinner, and it seems like every corner of the house needs serious attention. It will be another busy day.

As I was returning and rearranging books on the bookshelf early this morning, this spine poem jumped out at me:

Impromptu Spine Poetry

No Matter the Wreckage,
Take Joy-
Here I am:
Beloved.

Despite the physical and emotional mess I am feeling today, this is message I needed as a reminder today.
