Slice of Life 2018 Day 29: Life Equations

As I wrote in this post and this post, I adore Amy Krouse Rosenthal's work. She has a whole chapter in her book Textbook called Math (Unit 8), and it's filled with sweet equations. She also published an adorable children's book on equations called This Plus That: Life's Little Equations

Confession: I have a very poor growth mindset for math (especially with story problems), but these kinds of equations are perfect for me. My daughter, who turns ten next week, wrote some life equations with me. Below are a few we penned together:

(sofa snuggling + sleeping in) x book reading + no homework = Spring Break

(itchy leotards + wild costumes + flowers) x stage fright = dance recital
Daffodils her brother gave her at her dance recital

(backyard digging + stealing stuffed animals) x sneaking on furniture = naughty border collie puppy

Don't be fooled by this sweet face. This is a puppy who is always in trouble!

(cookies + honesty + exploration + confidence) x friendship = Girl Scouts
My Girl Scout in action selling cookies.
Our equations were fun to create together. Try one!

  1. Wonderful equations. I might have to tweak my post today to make it a little more mathish like the AKR style equation. Cute pictures. I read Textbook right after AKR’s death. It made me sad to think about her invitation to connect in that context.

    1. It still makes me sad to think about her death too. It took me a while to read this book because of that.

  2. These are so much fun. I have never tried writing equations. I think this would be effective to have students use in class for synthesis of new learning. Thanks for sharing. :)

  3. I love these equations, especially the spring break one. I also love that you wrote them with your daughter. Textbook is a favorite of mine. I need to try writing equations. Right now it would be: Spring break + rainy day = time to clean out the closet.

  4. I also adore AKR and her books. Life's Little Equations is a fun one to read and then to create your own! You and your daughter can do word math in amazing ways! These are great! For me today:
(Time to read + write + comment) x candles + cake = a fabulous birthday for me!

  6. I too am a fan of AKR but haven't read nearly enough of her work especially for children. I will look for the books you've mentioned and power up my library!

  8. Love your equations, especially the one about spring break which is my idea of paradise. And the Girl Scout equation + picture (love the hat) = Girl Power!
