On Monday I had the privilege to listen to broadcast journalist and Appleton East High School Alumni Joy Cardin. Ms. Cardin was the 2018 recipient of our school’s Patriot Award, an award presented annually to an Appleton East Alumni who has brought honor to his or herself, to her or his community, and her or his school based on achievements.
Ms. Cardin, best known as the well-respected Wisconsin Public Radio Talk Show Host of “The Joy Cardin Show,” shared her accomplishments and insights, along with snippets of wisdom for our students to consider, including:
- “I think being a good communicator is important no matter what career you choose.”
- “...look for adventures that make you happy..."
- “I hope that young people vote in every single election...the way I see it, every single election is important...I really hope that you will get out and vote in every election...you can change the world by voting.”

In reflection, after listening to Ms. Cardin's thoughtful words today, I wrote a triple Haiku:
Cardin considers:
What will serve greater good? She
Communicated
Important issues.
She sought to inform, connect,
Empower us all.
She advocates that
Each person’s voice, vote matters
For a fair, just world.
*******
Ms. Cardin, thank you for your time with our students on Monday and the impact you have had (and will continue to have) for so many Wisconsinites on issues that matter.
She spoke for seven of the eight periods of the day and had lunch with students. She also invited two former teachers to accompany her to the award ceremony. What a Patriot!
ReplyDeleteShe WAS an amazing Patriot!
DeleteNice to hear what is happening for students around the country. Sounds like a good day for students and staff. I love this line -

It was a good day, and I am glad that our students had the opportunity to listen. That is one of my favorite lines as well!
DeleteLook for adventures that make you happy--wonderful advice!
ReplyDeleteAgreed! The speaker is now retired, seeking adventures that make her happy!
DeleteJoy Cardin is someone I'd love knowing, and your haiku suggest to me you're following in her footsteps.
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind, Glenda!
