Tuesday Slice of Life: Coloring

"I brought coloring books. Does anyone want to color?"

"Oh my God! Yes!" Two sixteen-year-old students, sitting in the bus seat across from me, eagerly grab my small stash of coloring books, markers, and colored pencils. They page through the two books I brought, exclaiming at the spread of designs.

"I love to color," One of them shares, "I cannot even remember the last time I colored anything."

"Me too. We should have more times to color."

Indeed, I think and smile. For now, their iPhones are put away and they are coloring and chattering.

We are en route to a school-sponsored trip to Chicago. As a chaperone, I will be in close quarters with these high school students for the next three days. Beginning our trip with something light, like coloring on the bus, is a great way to begin our adventure.

  1. Love the idea of enticing teens to move away from video to coloring, a creative act, Trina. Enjoy your trip.

    1. Thanks! It was a great trip. I am exhausted, but it was fun (mostly) among the energy of 60 teenagers!

  2. It's great that these young people were open to such fun as coloringbooks. Even for adults coloring is therapeutic like swinging.

    1. I am always surprised when teens color. They are so playful. I agree that coloring is therapeutic, just like swinging (another love of mine)!

  3. Coloring, doodling, sketching: these are all therapeutic and creative activities. I imagine the students experienced a stress reduction as they colored. And have fun in Chicago.

    1. I love all three mentioned activities: sketching, coloring, and doodling. I believe that they did probably experience a stress reduction. At the end of the trip everyone was overtired and squirmy. I should have brought them out again!
