Slice of Life Challenge #21: Day 16: Searching for Slices

For the month of March, each day I am writing and posting a slice of my life, hosted by Two Writing Teachers.

Slice of Life Challenge #21 Day 16:

Searching for Slices

Have you ever had one of those days where you just don't know what to write?

Today I must have thought of six different ideas. I started writing. I stopped. I started writing again. I stopped. I just couldn't articulate the small moment I wanted to convey. All my slices seemed so...dull. Honestly, I spent more time generating ideas than crafting this post.

Some days are like that.

One of my many attempts at a slice today

Start.Stop.Start.Stop.Start./

Generate slice ideas./

Can't find the right words.

  1. I can relate completely to your writer's block! On the surface, it seems like it would be easy to come up with ideas -- a good writer can make anything interesting -- but I get stuck all the time. I'm glad that you still posted. We can do this!

  2. Yes, of course. Me too. I like to work a few days ahead so I don't panic when I can't think of anything. I can use a post sitting in my draft folder. Half way done and we've already accomplished so much.

  3. Yes. I have a list of over 50 topics I curated for this challenge, but the all felt meh. I went in another direction. Sometimes you need to write about how you don’t know what to write about.

  4. What's the dullest possible slice you could give us? Serve it up! It's interesting to think about what keeps us from taking an idea that seems less than worthy and expanding on it. And the fact that you spent more time crafting ideas than writing the slice for me sounds like grounds for celebration! And then you offer us a haiku to close it out. This slice is plenty full and plentiful!

  5. Yes, I (like others) have a list of ideas and thoughts that I can pull from but sometimes, usually when my mind is full to overflowing, I just cannot pull the ideas together to make sense. When I am most stuck, I remember a post by one of the TWT hosts several years ago that suggested you take something very small and unimportant from your day, like a rubber band you found in the vacuum, and write about it! I cannot remember her/his example, but that day I wrote about a rubber band in the vacuum canister.

  6. Um, YES! Often! I have also written about having nothing to write about. Then things sometimes come so fast and furious that I try to jot them down before I lose them. Your Slices are NOT dull. They are full of your thoughts and love and experiences of living... these are things of celebration, never out of style, never dull. Right about now is the hard stretch. We are getting tired. Slicing sustainability wavers. It's a good time to try a new even-if-it-feels-weird thing and see what that brings...just write!

  7. Oh yes- for sure. Do you always handwrite your slices first?

  8. I like how your slice wriggled itself out of hiding. Topic-less, or stuck writing are always great writing topics.

  9. Ha, I love a meta-slice! And this is how I ended up with book spine poetry today. Couldn't commit to a slice. Had some ideas. Nothing seemed like it wanted to be written. I am definitely feeling that hard stretch that Fran mentions in her comment.
